Historically, Pit Bulls were known as “Nanny Dogs,” because they are good with kids and protective of the youngest members of their human families. Two “Nanny Dogs” recently lived up to their nickname by saving two young kids from a venomous snake. According to WFLA-TV, Melissa Butt of Brandon, Fla.’s two grandkids 4-year-old Zayden and 1 1/2-year-old Mallory, were playing in the back yard with her dogs, Slayer and Paco. Suddenly, Butt says, the dogs set their sights on something in the grass. The two pups urgently barked and wouldn’t come when Butt called them. Recognizing this was unusual behavior for her dogs, Butt grew worried. She immediately took the children inside. When she and her husband went back outside to investigate the cause of the dogs’ alarm, they discovered the dogs engaged in a stand off with a poisonous Copperhead snake. Butt watched in horror as the snake lashed out and bit both dogs before Slayer grabbed the snake in his mouth and killed it. Panicked, Butt rushed her dogs to Blue Pearl Veterinary hospital for treatment. Both dogs were in bad shape but with quick action by the vets and an anti-venom treatment they will make a full recovery. “We need to get the anti-venom…quickly, in order for them to get a good prognosis. It is very, very painful,” Dr. Shelby Loos of Blue Pearl told WFLA. Butt told WFLA that she knows the snake would likely have bitten one or both of grandkids had her dogs not intervened. “That absolutely would have been one of my grandchildren.” The doting owner is making sure her pups are being extra spoiled after the ordeal. “Our pets aren’t pets,” Butt said. “They are 100 percent family members; this just proves they deserve to be.”
